s a huge fan of Transformers as a kid growing I was absolutely delighted when Futurama gave a nod to the original Transformers animated movie. Simpsons and Futurama writers are well known for their obscure allusions, and this is about as obscure as they come. It's these references, especially the geek related ones, that made and will make Futurama as beloved as it is.
So allow me to set the stage. For some of you, it may send chills down your spine to be reminded of the stoic phrase, "Megatron must be stopped! No matter the cost." Now picture Optimus Prime careening down a hill in Semi-truck form knocking Decepticons to-and-fro, only to transform in one fell-swoop while rocketing into the air, performing a spinning somersault as he rains laser blasts down on his enemies, all to the screaming sounds of Stan Bush's "You've Got the Touch!" Witness excellence: It was the defining moment of the movie, (aside from the "Dare to be Stupid" dance sequence with the Junkacons, of course) and there wasn't an 80s kid out there who wasn't knocked out of their Moon Boots when they saw it. Apparently a few of the writers and animators of Futurama shared a similar experience, because in episode 22, "A Bicyclops Built For Two", Fry pulls off the exact same move when fighting the rest of the Planet Express crew an online virtual reality first-person shooter. Observe: All I can say is bravo. Here's to Futurama making a comeback - I cannot wait. I can assure you we won't be seeing this in Michael Bay's version.
